Relay for Life has plans for new year

Staff writer

Taylor’s Relay for Life committee is set and ready to go for the New Year.
Taking the helm as event chair in 2011 is Tammy Patin, a woman who was raised in Taylor but now lives in Leander. Strong emotions and the need to contribute to the fight against cancer inspired her to get involved.
“I took on this responsibility after losing my grandfather to cancer in August,” Patin said. “I also lost my father-in-law, grandmother and uncle to cancer. So the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life event is very dear to my heart and so is raising money to find a cure for that horrible disease.”
The year’s first Relay for Life event is set to take place Jan. 11, 2011, at Grace Place in Taylor, located at 301 Grace Lane.
“It’ll be the kick-off,” Patin said. “From 5:30 to 7 p.m., people can come in and register or learn more about the event. And for those who have already registered, team packets will be available.”
Next comes a fundraising Father-Daughter Valentine’s Dance. Scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 11, 2011, it will take place at the Taylor Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 2201 E. Fourth St.
“Girls in grades Kindergarten through fourth are welcome to come out and dance with their dads,” Patin said. “Prices will be announced when tickets go on sale in January.”
Another fundraising event called Bark for Life is scheduled for March 26, 2011. It’s slated to take place at the East Williamson County Event Center in Taylor, located at 334 FM Road 397.
“I’m real excited about this event,” Patin said. “It’s the first time for us to put it on.”
Deanna Leschber, the committee’s online chair, is the main organizer for Bark for Life.
“It’s a four-hour event where people can come and walk their dogs,” Leschber said. “I think it’s a neat activity to incorporate because pets can keep our spirits lifted when we are sick.”
Details on Bark for Life’s entry fee and registration process will be announced toward the end of January.
These three events will, of course, culminate April 15 and 16, 2011, with Relay for Life’s Main Event. Scheduled from 7 p.m. April 15 to 7 a.m. April 16, the annual relay and candle ceremony will take place at Memorial Football Field in Taylor.
